First Energy Grant provides Kateri Day Camp with Planetarium Thanks to a grant from First Energy, Kateri Day Campers were treated to an experience that was out of this world—an inflatable planetarium brought right to them on our 260 acre campus.

Campers were brought out into our solar system where they got a guided tour and learned about the sun, the planets and their moons, constellations, and so much more! This interactive experience provided our campers with a great form of educational entertainment that engaged campers (and staff) of all ages. “It was so much fun! We got to lay on the floor and look up and see all the stars and learn about all of the planets!” exclaimed camper Jennifer (with several of her friends nodding in agreement).

First Energy Grant provides Kateri Day Camp with Planetarium Programs such as this one are vital for our campers since studies have statistically found that low-income youth lose 2 or more months of educational achievement over summer vacation (also known as the summer slide) while their middle and upper-class counterparts make gains. Kateri Day Camp serves over 200 low-income youth from 25 Monmouth County towns. In addition to supplemental edutainment activities such as this one, Kateri Day Camp also provides campers with literacy and mathematics programs to help reduce the summer slide.
